Woodward’s Garden (SF) – Epitome of SF

I last went 2-3 years but I always recommend this restaurant as a date spot. It’s intimate without being a cliche and the food is honest without being fussy.

The Space
Lots of construction outside w/ the bridge, many unsavory characters walking by outside, small space, maybe 10 tables, very intimate, lots of artwork on the walls… It’s got that ‘diamond in the rough’ feel, as well as that ‘hip, funky’ SF vibe going for it.

The Service
It’s a small place w/ few people so you forgive lapses…

The Food
I didn’t take detailed notes but here’s the best of my recollection:

Trout bruschetta
The trout was a bit thicker than expected but it was very very tasty. Served on crunchy whole wheat w/ a chipolte pepper spread. Very good.

Corn Chowder
Tasty, a little on the salty side, perhaps b/c of the intense bacon base… Good.

Wild Salmon
I am still spoiled by my Le Bernardin dinner in NYC… The salmon was very juicy, but just a tad overcooked in the middle. It was hot where it should be lukewarm at best. Ok.

Risotto
Only had a few bites, but very creamy… had a bit of basil throughout that gave it a nice refreshing taste. Good.

Hanger Steak
Only had a bite, but despite my friend asking for ‘medium’ done (what was he thinking?!?!), it was very good… Excellent salty crust.. I’d definiely order that next time. Very Good.

Lemon Pot au Creme
Nothing remarkable but a solid ending to a solid meal. Good.

Bittersweet Chocolate covered Creme Burlee
Too chocolately for me but everyone else loved it. Ok.
Overall, this restaurant seems to encapsulate the best of everyday SF dining: dodgy location, hip, honest, fresh, & tasty.
