Fantasy Sushi (Sunnyvale)

There’s a place in Sunnyvale that serves the best raw fish in America. You wouldn’t go there for subtlety, delicacy, or ambiance; no, you go there for the best fish available in this country.

It’s a controversial experience on 2 points: 1) expense and 2) quantity. Fantasy sushi is very expensive and you will probably leave uncomfortably full. It’s a interesting cross-section of 2 seemingly opposing trends in American cuisine – a little for a lot and a lot for a little – fantasy sushi is a lot for a lot.

What do you want to eat? i won’t go into all the details since I’ve reviewed Fantasy Sushi before but i will note the highlights.

1. Monkfish Liver

A creamy subtle piece of monkfish liver w/ absolutely no “livery” taste that’s all too common w/ inferior pieces. Topped w/ a citrus-y ponzu sauce.

2. Madai – Red Sea Bream

Cleanliness, topped w/ a touch of salt & lemon. The deep-fried burdock root garnish was as good as the best french fry of your life.

3. Salmon

Immaculate piece of salmon sitting on a yuzu w/ a mustard sauce. Without the yuzu, the mustard sauce was slightly coying, but when eaten together, the entire dish sung a beautiful harmony in your mouth.

4. Salmon Roe w/ Grated Radish

Oh my. By far the best dish of the night. That is all.

5. Baby Southern Japanese Blue Fin Toro

You’ve never had toro like this. Notice how white it is – ever see that?

6. Baby White Sweet Shrimp w/ Pickled Blue Eggplant

Very sweet, slightly gelatinous, the wasabi & eggplant cut through and balanced it out.

7. Bonito w/ Red Onion & Fried Garlic Chips

Kuruma in NY has the best bonito ever and this, admittedly, was not as good. But better than most – the garlic chips were outstanding.

8. Scottish Lobster Sashimi

Sweet, tender, & delicious.

9. Snow Crab w/ Sesame Tofu

One of my must-haves, sweet, juicy crab

10. Spanish Mackeral

Excellent piece of fish

11. Halibut Sashimi

Slightly dry, probably the least favorite dish of the night… but only b/c of the heights achieved by the previous dishes.

12. Samma (Pike) w/ Garlic, Green Onions, & Sesame Seeds
I don’t remember much but it was good.

13. Toro w/ Uni

Perfect uni, perfect toro, why must I be so full?

One of the better Fantasy Sushi meals i’ve had… As I said, it’s polarizing place – see Chez Pim’s Fantasy Sushi post where she reviews the same restaurant with a completely opposite take. But it is the best fresh fish in America.
