i have been to virtually all the greats in northeast spain and all in one trip and for me, mugaritz was my most compelling experience and chef andoni quite extraodinary.
i completely agree with the reviewer below about martin berasategui. he cooked at the highest level at his resto but he also prepared a "meal of the people" for 6 of us at gastelube, the oldest gourmet society in spain. that simple meal was one of the very best experiences eating in spain. it was the introduction to my very best beef experience in europe, galician beef, cattle not slaughtered until they are a minimum of 9 years old and treated like pets in their lifetimes.

I myself have been to Mugaritz although i have to say i didnt share the same experience you have on their food. Their food was creative and innovative but I thought lacked some fluidity in terms of the succession of flavors in my pallete. I was there last Feb, we went on a month long Culinary Trip eating at most of the 3 star restaurants we can find in a city we landed at :).

If you ever return to San Sebastian, I would really recommend Martin Berasategui, it was phenomenal and I really consider it as one of my best places to eat. French Laundry and Per Se, still tops my list, Then Tetsuya in Sydney. But for sure, you have to try Martin if you are ever in the parts of the world.

[...] Mugaritz (redux) - The first meal still ranks as the most unique meal I’ve ever had with a trio of desserts that outshine even Sam Mason. [...]
