I reserved a lunch at Pierre Gagnaire this July 2009. I see they have a menu du marche for 105 euro or a tasting menu for 265 euro. Will the less expensive lunch impress or do we need to order the tasting menu? Anyone know?

Just a note, will-smith,
Gagnaire will be opening his outpost here in Las Vegas at the Mandarin Oriental in CityCenter. It will be called Twist by Pierre Gagnaire and is scheduled to open near the end of the year. The property is set to open in October, but I don't know if his restaurant is on the same timeline.

I hope Monsieur Gagnaire can whether this international recession! I suspect he will endure -- there are still plenty of diners who will make a pilgrimage to his temple. I certainly would. Glad he never followed Robuchon and Savoy to Las Vegas, either; I suspect that would have been a TREMENDOUS disaster like Gaya, apparently..although I've heard Sketch in London is mostly successful?

[...] This post is the most difficult one I have ever written. It seems that this is a common thing for Pierre Gagnaire as Chuck has experienced the same thing and speaks of a “roller coaster” curse. I didn’t know how to express the fact that I was a bit disappointed but at the same time had experienced a wonderful lunch. It’s important to me to convey exactly what I feel and what I think. Until I feel that the post is true to my feelings, I am unable to publish my review. So, this is the reason why I took me forever to write up this experience. I’m sorry. [...]

[...] So, what was the most memorable meal of 2007? What was the best? What was disappointing, and what was most expensive? Reading Chuck’s eating blog you would know that the highest price doesn’t necessarily award you with the most delicious and supreme meal. Read here about Chuck’s most expensive Pierre Gagnaire dinner. [...]

Thanks much for your quick and clear reponse. To be sure: is the tasting menu the same at le dejeuner and le diner and at the same price? I have just submitted a reservation request for dinner on the 17th.

dbird, the normal tasting menu is 225 euros. in today's dollars, that's approx $300 all in. so, yes, you can have the food for that amount; if you want to drink, they have whites for 50-100 euros.

if PG is closed, I'd consider L'Arpege or Ledoyen.

Gaya is trash - i wrote a review in the Paris section.

truffles & tips aside: is it possible to have the meal one would want at PG for $350 all in? I will have 2 days in Paris 16-18 August, and want to make the best of the time and limited resources. I have L'Atelier Joel Robuchon on my schedule, and was hoping to add one more serious destination. But I don't want to feel as if I am scrimping so would rather aim a bit lower for my high end (is Gaya worth considering) and have the full experience. Perhaps everything is still ferme le aout during my visit which would at least make things easier.

To help calibrate my own taste and budget, I will reference your NY sushi meter. Never yet to Masa, relatively often to Yasuda, and once to Kurumazushi which was as good as you say but while I didn't order omakase, I was served and charged for several pieces of o toro (after I had specifically said I preferred chu toro) and have been leery of returning since. I think I was served 4 pieces at $20 each.

I am fond of WD50 but haven't yet made it to Moto.

Thanks for any advice.
