What an incredible experience. It's one to last a lifetime. And may I just say that green tea shave ice looks to be as big as my head. ;)

I wish I had Durston's guide when I was there two years ago. I spent some time walking around that part of Kyoto, but I didn't know about these places. There are so many weird little dishes in Japan, sweet and savory, that you never see here in the US, and it's easy to be put off by them if you don't try them at a place that really makes them right.

Chuck, the preserved disneyesq section I assume you are speaking of is the area surrounding the "red temple." Kyoto did feel like a bit of the japanese clining to a past that was no longer there, but I don't know if we as westerners should be that jaded. I found Kyoto to be a beautiful city of contradictions like most of japan. Deeply modern but around any corner you could be transported back 200 years.

I however am not a huge fan of the Japanese sweets. I prefere the more western style french deserts that you find all over japan. Give me a desert with 6 egg yolks and a ton of heavy cream or give me death! Wait, revise that, give me a super choloric desert AND give me death.
