I am so pleased that you enjoyed this restaurant. It is really one of the most enjoyable places to eat in the UK. It may not be smart but the obsession that Stephen Harris brings to ingredients is very rare in the UK, where even in multiple starred Michelin places you can end up with distinctly ordinary produce. I have four meals at the Sportsman in the last year, and each has been superb. This is a real pain in the neck to get to if you live in west London as I do, but it is truly “worth a special journey”, as a certain guide might put it.

Thanks Arthur – absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in/near London (1 hour train ride). No pics of shepherd’s pie – it wasn’t on the tasting menu – but i will certainly try it next time!

Great review, Chuck – I had no idea such a place existed. I absolutely LOVE the printed story behind the ham; it shows an honest and genuine commitment to the restaurant’s local philosophy in a way you rarely see at the many “locavore” places you find nowadays.

Must add this one to the mental list. I love shepherd’s pie; can’t wait to see your pics of it.

Oh my goodness, Chuck! Impressing.
I had the uncommon pleasure of meeting the chef and wife before experiencing his cuisine – last week at the http://gastrosontour.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/identity-crisis-event-in-de-wulf/ and can’t wait to get an opportunity to make a stop there. Fantastic photos!

paul, don’t do egullet but, yes, now i recall seeing a picture of ‘the salad’ – and it has curry – definitely need to try that

agirl, felix – possibly/probably sometime next year – will let you know

zwampen – i could see loving that lamb belly (ours had a pretty thick batter compared to other pictures i’ve seen), i understand it, but heavy dishes like that are not my preference these days

Chuck i am glad you liked your meal at “The Sportsman”, P.S Chef Stephen Harris does do a Michel Bras style salad dish, he calles it a Salmagundy, just go onto the UK&Ireland section of Egullet and click on “The Sportsman” topic and scroll down on the first page and you will see a picture of the dish.
