Coveted Food Items
This is list of food items that are highly recommended. This list is in its nascent stage but I will continue adding to it (and begin writing reviews.)
Condiments
- BLis Maple Syrup - aged in 18yr old whiskey barrels, you can buy it from Mikuni Wild Harvest.
- Fleur de Sel de Guérande Sea salt - this can make every dish taste 3 notches better. Read more about it on David Lebovit’s site.
- Jean-Yves Bordier - this butter from Brittany is ridiculously good. The butter seeps salt water and more resembles a cheese thanks to its intense richness. In my experience, it is served at a few Parisian restaurants but the L’Arpege version is far superior to everyone else.
Drinking
- Mariage Freres Marco Polo tea - floral notes, I drink 1/2 gallon of this tea every day.
- Straus 2% milk - far richer than ordinary milk, cream still on top, with a slight sweetness.
- Badoit water - lightly carbonated, lots of great mineral taste
- Rochefort 10 trappiste ale - very rich, somewhat sweet, port-like
Meat
- Prather Ranch beef - grass fed, dry-aged, great grass & mineral taste
- Heritage animals (chicken, pork, & turkey) - forgotten or unfavored breeds that often have better flavor than today’s supermarket animals. Modern-day industrial practices have left these breeds for dead.
Chocolate
- Paul A Young (London) - made from Amadei chocolate, my favorite chocolates in the world
- JP Hevin cheese chocolates (Paris) - very different combination that usually works very well; unfortunately, you must eat them in Paris since they won’t pass through Customs.
- Kee’s (New York) - great fresh chocolates in Soho - go early or there will be none left.
- Amadei Porcelana & Chuao bars - they are pricey but worth every penny. You can buy them at Fog City News, featured in this blog article.
Things to Try
- DC Duby chocolates - this review sounds quite promising. Too sweet - review forthcoming.
- Steaz soda - soda for grown-ups; I may have had this at French Laundry
- Alegio Chocolates - I just got a bite at the chocolate show but definite potential.
- Couture Chocolates - wholesale for now but a store will be opening soon in Sacremento.
- DragonFly Cakes - had a taste and it had promise.
- many more things

I have to say I enjoyed your blog but the list of “Coveted Food Items” really pushed me into adoration. Rochefort 10 is quite possibly the worlds most perfect beer IMHO, Mariage Freres Marco Polo tea is a standby for me, Steaz soda is poppy without being over carbonated, and light and refreshing.
Thanks for giving us a look into your “favorites”!

Hello,
My brother was served GUS (Grown Up Soda) when he asked for something non-alcoholic at Per Se. Its pretty good, especially the Ginger & Orange flavors. I will have to look for the Saetz stuff. The GUS stuff is really easy to find in NY.
